EXPERIENTIAL PHOTOBOOTH DESIGN
Inspired by the vibrant traditions and cultural nuances of the Mappila community, this set design aims to capture the essence of a Mappila wedding, transporting participants into an immersive and authentic experience.
Most studies show that the most distinctive characteristic of a wedding in the Mappila community of Kozhikode, Kerala, is the dance which is performed around the bride before the bridegroom ceremoniously enters the Maniyara which is the room where the newlywed resides after their marriage in the bride’s house, as this is a matrilineal community. The dance performance is called Oppana, where the dancers, clap and move around the bride in patterns, keeping her in the centre. Taking this element forward, I created a space which would portray a wedding in the Mappila community.
It is set against the timeless backdrop of an old house, reminiscent of the traditional architecture inherent to the Mappila community, evoking the ambience of a historic yet lively celebration.
Drawing inspiration from one of the most integral elements of Mappila wedding rituals, the Mogra flower, the floor design pays homage to its symbolism and beauty.
The dancers are carefully placed around the bride in different poses showcasing typical movements, and are clad in traditional attire and jewellery to retain the true essence of the age-old tradition. While the vibrant rhythmic beats of the Oppana music playing in the background infuses the space with joy and festivity!
Embracing the modern phenomenon of selfies, this set incorporates an interactive photobooth where the audience can engage with exhibits and pose as the bride. By capturing these moments, participants would leave with a personalised souvenir, a photograph that encapsulates their immersion in the Mappila wedding experience. This fusion of tradition and technology offers a unique opportunity for the audience to connect with the cultural heritage of the Mappila community while creating lasting memories of their own.
